I am currently porting numbers away from our local telecom company. I have been doing it department by department as we have alot of DID’s. The problem that I am worrying about is the local telecom has been firing people left and right. The writing is on the wall they are closing shop. What happens to the DID’s that I have not moved yet. If they close how do I get them transferred over.

Get as much documentation as you can. Ideally you’ll have a detailed billing statement with all DIDs on it and a Customer Service Record (CSR.) The CSR is a spreadsheet that contains a list of the underling carriers and billing info for each one of your DIDs. This can be surprisingly inconsistent especially if you’ve added numbers over time. It can be used to complete number ports if there are disputes. In a nightmare scenario you can take you billing statement and CSR and use it as evidence in an FCC complaint.

IMHO: the most likely scenario is that your local provider get gobbled up by a bigger player.

Yeah they did get gobbled up by a bigger player. But word on the street is the bigger player is trying to make all the bought up company’s look good for selling. I heard rumors they were trying to sell all the bucket trucks and make the guys use ladders only.
